What are you to do when you experience the end of the world..at the end of the world? (or at least a very remote part of it)
The Long Dark is is an immersive first-person Survival Sandbox and the debut title from Canadian independent developer Hinterland. The game contains certain elements of survival horror stemming from the atmospheric nature of the game and the natural dangers that the player faces. The game is more grounded in reality than most other games in the genre. The game's Steam page emphasizes the fact that there are no zombies, only you vs. the wilderness.
The player must survive in the wilds of northern Canada in the depths of winter after they fall victim to a plane crash. There are several species of wildlife currently implemented, including the hostile wolves and bears which pose a threat to the player. The game features other challenges in the form of hunger, thirst, and, of course, the bitter cold.

The Early Access build of the game focused on the sandbox survival mode with no win conditions, plus a number of challenge modes with various win conditions. The full release version of the game also features a 5-episode story mode campaign. The map is pre-made rather than being procedurally generated, but the placement of items is random.
The four difficulty levels alter the challenge in significant ways. In Pilgrim (Easy), you are more of an explorer with no wolves attacking you. Just you having the world to explore without danger. Voyageur (Medium) is more balanced where you are part hunter, part survivor and face a reasonable challenge in the game. Stalker (Hard) is where nearly everything is trying to kill you around every corner. Interloper (Hardest) is a extreme challenge where only a small amount of supplies are available on the entire map.

The Long Dark was released in alpha form for Steam Early Access on September 22, 2014. It was finally released in full on August 1, 2017, with the first 2 episodes of the story campaign unlocked on release, and the remaining 3 episodes to be released at a later date.
The story itself focuses on two characters, Will McKenzie and Astrid Greenwood, a pilot and a doctor, respectively, who were once married and have since gone their separate ways..until one cold, snowy night when Astrid suddenly shows up at Will's front door with a locked hardcase and a request to be flown to Great Bear, a remote, nearly uninhabited region of the Canadian Wilderness. The two take flight in Will's plane against a worsening storm..but while en route a bright green aurora flares up from the north and knocks them from the sky. Now stranded and lost, the two now must reunite while battling everything mother nature has to throw at them, from frigid cold, to hungry wolves and bears, to the strange cosmic phenomenon that has knocked out anything and everything electric, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to the world around them..and why they are here in the first place. At the end of the day, however, before the sun slips below the horizon and heralds forth freezing temperatures and fierce predators that they hope their fire can keep at bay through the night, only two real choices remain: Survive, or fade into The Long Dark..

My mom said, ‘Just because you’re a trombone player doesn’t mean you have to act like a guy.’ I can wear pretty dresses, I can have long hair.” The word “Megumi” means “grace” in Japanese, and Kanda says, “I can be graceful and be a trombone player. “I had my first girl in maybe five years recently,” she says. The piece was performed earlier in his tenure, and Kanda says, “There’s nothing like playing it with Edo.

Playing on The Hunted challenge. I ate a candy bar that was at 30% or so and got food poisoning from it.
Luckily (so I thought) I had made some reishi tea. I drank it, but it had no effect.
Does medicine have a chance of not working? I didn't use the medicine interface, I just drank it in my inventory, but I figure the effect is the same no matter how you drink it right?

That goddamn candy bar took me down to 5% condition. I thought for sure I was going to die from it!
It might not seem like a big deal to complain about tea not working, but it's a bug that nearly killed me. Of all the things to get food poisoning from too right?
I managed to recover some condition in the farmhouse, but the bear had caught up to me by then. Unloading a flare into his face did no good, I had to fire a second one to get him off my back.
I made it safely up to the radio tower where I proceeded to prepare 15 cups of coffee at the fire barrel. :D Does fire keep the hunted bear away? I never saw him when I was brewing.
Making my way through the dam environs I managed to avoid two wolf attacks thanks to decoys.
Fluffy was waiting for me to try and lighten the load before she sprang at me from the darkness. I had to fight Fluffy three different times before she succumbed to my knife. Thankfully I now had three more decoys ready to drop.
I spent the night in the dam to recover some condition. The next morning that damn bear was waiting for me! Luckily a single flare was enough to get him off my back this time. I took the river to the camp office, as the bear seemed to be patrolling the train tracks area.
After recovering a little more condition in the camp office and by now having consumed eight cups of coffee or so, I made a beeline for the trapper's homestead with three hours of light left.

No bear in site, but I had to drop all three decoys to get wolves off my trail. I guess they like the taste of Fluffy then?
Great challenge, I only wish I hadn't wasted time recovering from the candy bar! Also it would be a nice touch if you could start off part 2 with the same supplies you brought with you. I didn't bring 4000 calories of food with me for nothing!

The Long Dark finally got its story mode, referred to as Wintermute. Players were diving in across all major platforms on Tuesday, with new and old alike confused on how to make Rosehip Tea. You see, Rosehip Tea used to be easier to craft, but Hinterland has changed things up slightly and thrown players off.
How to Make Rosehip TeaThe first step to making Rosehip Tea is finding a Rose Hip bush and choosing the option to Harvest Rose Hips. You will need 24 to make one cup of Rosehip Tea. Luckily, Rose Hip bushes are often found in groups of three or more, with each bush containing eight.
Once you’ve picked 24 Rose Hips, open your backpack and navigate to the Recipes tab. There you will see the Prepared Rosehips option. If you have 24 Rose Hips, you should also have a checkmark over the box letting you know you can craft it. Click the Prepared Rosehips box to select it, and then click the Begin Crafting button at the bottom.
Rosehip Tea must be cooked. Find a fire or start one, and then interact with it to bring up the menu. Navigate to the Food tab, and then scroll down until you see Prepared Rosehips. With Prepared Rosehips selected, click on Cook and your Rosehip Tea will be ready in a jiffy. Rosehip Tea acts as a painkiller that will instantly heal your sprains. That’s going to become an issue for players that like to walk around on hills while carrying too much loot.
There’s a lot more to craft in The Long Dark than just Rosehip Tea, so study up on how to craft a Survival Bow, and then get busy making a Simple Arrow. Those are two essential tools to Survival Mode.
